Installing a Minecraft modpack from the Torchlite panel
On this page

In short: Torchlite hosts free modded Minecraft servers in Bucharest. NeoForge (Minecraft 1.21.1) and Forge (Minecraft 1.20.1) servers run on the Max plan with 4.2 GB of RAM, 1.8 Xeon cores and 35 GB of disk; Fabric packs run on Lite (1.5 GB) or Turbo (3 GB). The panel's Modpacks page installs any server-compatible Modrinth pack in a few clicks. It is free: a short ad break in the panel pays for each start and renew, and Max is renewed every 30 minutes while it runs.

Which server for which pack

Every modpack is built for one mod loader and one Minecraft version, both listed on its Modrinth page. Create the server type that matches:

Pack is built onServer typePlanRAM
NeoForge, Minecraft 1.21.1NeoForgeMax4.2 GB
Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1ForgeMax4.2 GB
FabricFabricLite or Turbo1.5 or 3 GB

Our NeoForge server installs 1.21.1 and our Forge server installs 1.20.1, the versions most current packs on each loader target. Packs for other versions of the same loader can still work; the panel lets you switch the Java version if one needs it.

How much RAM a pack needs

4.2 GB fits light packs and most large "kitchen sink" packs with a few hundred mods for a small group. A few dozen Fabric mods usually run fine on Turbo's 3 GB. Many pack pages state a recommended server RAM: if it is well above 4 GB, the pack is too heavy for a free server, and the console will show an out-of-memory error.

The Java flags are tuned for you. Torchlite's Minecraft servers start with Aikar's G1 garbage collector flags, sized to leave room for the memory Java uses outside the heap.

Install a pack

  1. On Create your server, pick Max and NeoForge or Forge, or Lite or Turbo and Fabric.
  2. In the panel, open the Minecraft group in the sidebar and click Modpacks.
  3. Set Provider to Modrinth, search for the pack, choose its version and click Install Modpack.
  4. When the install finishes, press Start and accept the EULA.

The modpack guide covers backups, the Delete Existing Files option and updating a pack later. To pick mods one by one instead, see installing mods.

Players need the same pack

A modded server only accepts players running the same mods. Each player installs the same pack, in the same version, in a launcher such as the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher, then joins with your server's address. If someone is kicked with a list of mods, their version does not match yours.

Keeping it running

Max holds the most memory, so it renews every 30 minutes while it runs; the Renew button opens in the last 5 minutes. Keep the panel open in a tab while you play. A Max server is your account's one free game server, like any other plan. Missing a renew only stops the server: the world and the mods stay. The renewal guide has every rule.

Frequently asked questions

Can I host a Forge modpack for free?

Yes. Create a Forge server on the Max plan, which gives 4.2 GB of RAM, and install the pack from the Modrinth page in the panel or upload it over SFTP.

Which Minecraft versions do the modded servers use?

NeoForge installs Minecraft 1.21.1 and Forge installs 1.20.1. A Fabric server can move to another Minecraft version from the Versions page in the panel.

Does CurseForge work?

The panel lists CurseForge, but it is not set up on Torchlite. Use Modrinth, or upload a CurseForge server pack yourself over SFTP.

Is 4.2 GB enough for my pack?

For most packs and a small group, yes. If the pack page recommends much more than 4 GB, pick a lighter pack.
