You can choose between two Assetto Corsa servers, and they are different programs. Pick by how you want to drive: sessions with qualifying and a race, or open roads where people cruise and AI cars fill the gaps.

Two variants

Assetto Corsa is Kunos' official dedicated server. It downloads from Steam with your own Steam login and runs practice, qualifying and race sessions on the track and cars you choose. Its settings are the classic cfg/server_cfg.ini and cfg/entry_list.ini.

Assetto Corsa (Freeroam + AI) is AssettoServer, a community server built for freeroam, with optional AI traffic. It installs from its own releases, so no Steam login is needed. It starts with the BMW M3 E30 on Magione, both part of the base game, with 18 car slots by default (Max clients goes from 2 to 25). AssettoServer's own options, AI traffic among them, live in cfg/extra_cfg.yml.

Both run on our HDD node. Assetto Corsa needs two ports, and the panel assigns both when it builds the server: the game port, for TCP and UDP, and an HTTP port that Content Manager and the lobby query before anyone joins. You can see both on the Network page. Two free plans are offered:

Before you start

  • For the official server: the Steam username and password of an account that owns Assetto Corsa, since only owners can download the dedicated server. With Steam Guard on, keep your phone or email at hand for a code.
  • For both: nothing else. Each server gets a random admin password, which you can read or change on Startup.
  • For players: Assetto Corsa on PC with the same cars and track as the server. Mod content has to be installed by every player and uploaded to the server too.

Your Steam login is stored in the server's Startup settings, so anyone you add as a subuser with access to Startup can read it.

How to start

  1. On Create your server, choose a plan, then the variant.
  2. On the official server, the Setup step asks for Steam Username and Steam Password. Anything left blank becomes changeme and has to be replaced on Startup before the server can download. Freeroam + AI has no setup step.
  3. Confirm your email with the code we send. The server is built and the files download.
  4. With Steam Guard, the first download usually fails. Put a fresh code in Steam Auth Code on Startup and press Reinstall Server under Settings straight away, before the code expires.
  5. Players add the server in Content Manager by its address and HTTP port, or find it in the lobby. In chat, /admin and the Admin Password from Startup give you admin rights.

To change track and cars on the official server, edit TRACK= and CARS= (car folder names separated by ;) in cfg/server_cfg.ini, and give cfg/entry_list.ini one [CAR_n] block per slot. The server name, passwords and ports are rewritten from Startup at every start, so change those there. The Assetto Corsa guide covers uploading your own content over SFTP.

Common problems

The install never downloads the game. The Steam login failed: a typo, changeme still in place, or an expired Steam Guard code. Fix the fields on Startup and run Reinstall Server again.

Steam keeps getting in the way at start. With Auto Update on, the official server signs in to Steam at every start to look for updates. Once a clean install works, you can switch it off; the server files rarely change.

Raising Max clients added no slots. On Freeroam + AI, cfg/entry_list.ini was written once at install with one car per slot. Add more [CAR_n] blocks to match.

Players are refused when joining. Usually their car or track differs from the server's copy; everyone needs exactly the same version of each mod.
